When you get to a certain age, you begin to think…
Wait, that’s a little presumptuous isn’t it? How about this?
When I got to a certain age I began to think about all the things I wanted to accomplish in my life. And let me tell you, that’s very dangerous pattern of thought to have when Udemy advertise daily on Facebook. Especially when they’ve got some kind of perma-sale on.
It got me thinking though. Years ago, on a whim, I’d purchased a course on game programming in Unity. By now it would be horribly out of date, but the idea was good. I’d always wanted to write games when I was younger. Who didn’t? And now with *mumble mumble* years of professional development experience behind me, it should be a piece of cake right? How different can game programming be to writing server-side code for websites in trendy scripting languages?
So wallet in hand I dived in to Udemy’s murky depths… And found a pleasant surprise. The course I bought all those years ago had just been updated for 2018!
“It’s a sign!” I told myself. And laughed because I don’t believe in signs, but you know. Whatever gets the old motivation going.
“But wait!” I thought as my credit card started to go limp in my hands. “Games aren’t just code! I’ll need graphics and sound!”
My credit card perked up, and a few minutes later I was the proud owner of some shiny new courses in “Pixel art for video games” and “Game music composition”. And I got that little buzz I get from buying something extravagant and probably utterly pointless. Because yay capitalism.
Time to see how deep this rabbit hole goes…
